The Great Miami River is one of the most productive fisheries in the entire region. It is loaded with big carp, catfish, smallmouth bass, and saugeye, and you can sometimes even catch crappie, perch, and an occasional pike. The stretch of river flowing from where the Stillwater and Mad rivers converge with the GMR on down to the low dam at the old Tate Station holds some of the greatest diversity of fish species, and some good opportunities to catch some very big fish.

After Fisherman’s Quarters closed down not too long ago, a new Fisherman’s Headquarters is now open in the same location, and going strong. Please support them so that this valuable asset to our community stays available.

We Care Arts is a local non-profit organization that helps emotionally, mentally, and physically disabled adults and youth achieve greater personal independence.

RAISING REDWORMS IS SOMETHING EVERYONE SHOULD DO . . . especially gardeners & fishermen!

Here’s why:

1. Worms consume kitchen scraps, paper, and cardboard. We could divert a significant amount of our household garbage from going to landfills, if everyone raised worms.

2. Worms produce one of the best slow release organic fertilizers available, while consuming the materials listed above. Even if you don’t garden or have indoor plants, you can give it away.

3. Of course worms are an excellent bait for fishing, and can be used to catch a variety of fish. If you don’t fish, you can still give some away.

4. If one person threw in a handful of leftover worms at their favoarite fishing spot, no big deal. If EVERYONE that fishes threw some extra worms in every time they went fishing, it would have a significant impact on improving fishing. Fed fish grow faster and larger, fed fish bite more aggressively, fish that are fed repeatedly from teh same location will hang around waiting to be fed again. Again, if everyone did this, we would see a difference.

5. Finally, raising worms is very simple! To learn how easy it is to set up your own worm farm . . . click here.

Now that’s a win win win win situation!

Aquaculture(fish farming) has been growing in popularity over the last decade, but there is also a lot that can be done to improve fishing productivity on our public waters. Many local residents fish for food, but fishing in the Greater Dayton just isn’t what it could be. A new organization has been started in the Miami Valley, that plans to do something about it. It’s sole purpose is to unite as many area fishermen as possible to pool their resources to make fishing more accessible, and more productive, all across our area. Read all about it here: Greater Dayton Fishing Association
