Supporting the Feed Dayton Urban Farming Program
There are many ways listed below for you to support our program, but first let me draw your attention to our Fall Leaf Cleanup & Removal Service. This is an opportunity for you to fund our program without having to make a donation, while providing valuable resources (leaves) for our growing sites. {read more here}
Here are some other ways that you can support Feed dayton:
Volunteer – There are numerous opportunities for people to be involved as volunteers in this program. The more “growers” we have, the more food we can raise. We will also need people to help with harvesting, even if only to supervise those who are “picking”. Other opportunities will be available in pest control, composting, marketing, research, accounting, and much more.
Provide plants – We will be collecting large quantities of perennial crop plants such as high quality ever-bearing raspberry, ever-bearing strawberry, rhubarb, and asparagus. We will likely also collect various high quality perennials that can be grown out and divided to help beautify our city’s main thoroughfares.
Yard Waste – We will be collecting all of the leaves and grass clippings we can get our hands on. Eventually we plan on being able to take heavy weeds and brush when a commercial chipper becomes available.
Materials – Concrete reinforcing wire will be needed for tomatoes, pea, and bean supports. Plastic mulching material will be needed too. Organic pest controls such as Neem Oil and BT will be required to control insect damage and corn gluten will be used to help control weed germination.
Equipment – Whether you have equipment that you no longer use, or equipment that is not normally used in the off season, the right tool always makes the job easier.
Land – If you have a vacant lot that you own and would like to have it considered for a farming site for the Feed Dayton Urban Farming Program, let us know. If there is vacant city owned land that you would like to recommend, we would like to know about those lots as well.
Provide PAINLESS financial support – There are several ways available to generate revenue in support of this program without it costing anyone any money . . . no donations or gifts. The simplest method is by utilizing Internet sales commissions and advertising revenue. The opportunities are endless.
